Electricity billing is a tremendous problem. It can cause a big hole in the pocket if essential measures are not taken to conserve electricity.
A well-managed electricity system can save you and your pocket from a big curse.
It is therefore important to stay away from the factors that are leading to the wastage of electricity.
One major source of electricity wastage rests in the bathroom.
The bathroom light and fan working together with just one switch can waste much of the electricity that would ultimately result in an unexpected rise in the billing that can bother you in the future.
The fan is required while you are in the shower or done with it to completely dry the surroundings. The light, on the other, is important every time you enter the bathroom.
If you have one switch to operate both, then the fan would start working even when you don’t need it.
Thus, having one switch for operating both can be a real waste of your precious resources.
How To Separate The Fan And Light:
- Make a hole in the drywall for placing the electrical box. The best spot needs to be close to the door. You would need a drywall saw to create a hole. Once you make the drywall hole, you would need the remodeling box that you can anchor directly to the drywall. Pull out the cable that exists between the switch, fan, and light. Identify the cables that you need for operating the fan. The fan cable has two wires that are in white and black color. It can be an enormous problem if the wires are not in two different colors.
- Check out the three-conductor cables that are black, white, and bare. Sometimes, there might be 2 conductor cables in which the red wire is missing. Attach the fan and the light to the cable. If there is just one hot wire, then twist it with the black cable coming from the switch. For a firm connection, use the pliers to twist them. With a 3 conductor cable, you cannot ignore the red wire. This red wire is essential to separate the two accessories. The hot wire of the fan needs to be connected with the black wire of the switch. The hot wire of the light goes to the red wire of the switch. Don’t worry if the colors are different. Combine all white and all bare wires.
- Take a utility knife to strip the cables in the box. Make sure that the wire ends are exposed. Connect the hot circuit wire to the brass terminal of the switch. Attach the hot wire from the fan to the bottom terminal. Twist all the white wires in the box in a clockwise direction with the pliers. Also, twist together the ground wires. Connect one end of the wire to the green ground terminal of the switch. Fix the switch and the cover plate to the box to complete the wiring.
Points to Ponder
- Shut off the circuit before starting working with the wires.
- Check the performance of the circuit with the voltage tester.
- Sometimes, you might have to turn off the breakers.
- Don’t switch on until the task is over.
