November 1, 2020 by Robinson Leave a Comment

The sewer smell is a terrible problem. The horrible smell makes life miserable for the dwellers.

Why Does My Bathroom Smell Like Sewer In The Winter

Although this smell can arise any time, mostly it is the wintertime that the smell becomes too hard to resist.

Methane and bacterial growth are the primary cause of this smell.

If your bathroom is smelling like sewage in winters, it means that there is a severe problem with your plumbing.

Regular maintenance and cleaning can resolve the matter related to the foul odor.

What Is The Sewer Smell Like?

Sewer smell is a blend of bacteria and methane. The smell is not just bothering and irritating, but it is equally hazardous for health.

It starts with just a headache and can lead to more complex problems later on. In some severe cases, methane buildup can lead to a tremendous explosion.

So this condition is a severe threat to health and personal safety.

Causes Of Sewer Smell

The causes of sewer gas smell development in winters are because of several reasons. Some common ones are:

  • Excessive evaporation in the P-trap piping.
  • Faulty seals
  • Broken or leaked or pipe.
  • Out of order or damaged sewer or significant drain.
  • Any blockage in the pipes

In case of these reasons, the bathroom smells like a sewer.

How To Deal With The Smell?

If the bathroom has developed an unpleasant odor, then it is easy to get rid of it. The solution rests within the home.

To correct the problem, check for the causes both outside and inside the house. Some necessary remedial actions are:

The Solution In The Outdoors

One of the common reasons for the bathroom odor in the winters exists in the septic tank.

Regular septic tank cleaning is a must. It is better to do the cleaning after every three years. A baker’s yeast can do the magic in the septic tank.

Don’t forget to peep into the septic tank before the winter is here. Do the same at the end of the winter.

Replace or fix the damaged pipes. Don’t forget about the vent stacks on the roofs. During winters, birds and small animals try to find comfort in the vents.

They create their nests. The debris left behind can cause blockades, which ultimately results in an awful smell. In the frozen cold areas, the vents freeze.

To prevent this, cover the vents with black paint. The black color helps attract the sunlight more and prevents the ice from building up.

The Solution Indoors

Inside the home, the odor comes from dry traps. To keep the traps moist, run the water regularly.

Flush all the toilets along with the sinks and tubs at least once in three weeks.

Conclusion

Winter can be terrible if you do not check the bathrooms properly. To save your bathroom and protect your health, keep a close check on the happenings.

This will be a menace if you are not vigilant enough.  Just a few precautionary measures can save the system from an enormous problem.

Keep a close check on the bathrooms and enjoy a safe winter.
